Third Party Only

Third Party, Fire and Theft

Fully Comprehensive

It is illegal in the UK to drive on public roads without at least basic insurance. The law defines this minimum level of insurance cover with which you are legally permitted to drive a car on the road in Great Britain. It's commonly known as Third Party Only. This type of insurance only covers the cost of damage or loss to other people's property, and not your own. If you crash into another car, and you were at fault, your insurer will deal with the claim from the other driver. Whether you were at fault or not, they will not deal with any damage to your own car. The same applies if your car is lost, stolen or damaged by fire. If you have a very inexpensive car and feel happy about standing the cost of repairing or replacing it at your own expenses then, because of its low cost, Third Party insurance might be worth the risk. You can improve the cover you get on a basic Third Party insurance policy by taking an additional level of protection for risks arising out of Fire or Theft. If your car is damaged by fire, or is stolen, then your insurer will cover the loss you incur if you have opted for this extra cover. A fully comprehensive policy is the most expensive form of car insurance you can buy. When you buy a car and use finance or HP, then part of the agreement you sign will require that you keep your car insured comprehensively. In simple terms it provides cover for everything protected under a Third Party, Fire and Theft policy but also protects you from the cost of repairs to your own car if it is involved in an accident. Other aspects of cover can also be provided, depending on the policy. Be sure to check you have all the features you want: Repair and replacement of damaged windscreens and glass, Damage by vandals, theft of car radios or personal items left in the car, Commuting to work or business use. Breakdown services can often be added to your policy at a discount Service level Any driver: If required, you'll be asked for details on what type of driver you want cover for. Money can be saved by specifying low-risk drivers, but drivers of a higher-risk than specified would not be covered unless agreed beforehand. Any car: Most (private) policies allow you to drive only the car(s) specified. You must make arrangements for any other cars. If the other car is already covered by a fully comprehensive policy, you could well be covered, but for third party only. Even this is not automatically given, so check first.

Legal Cover

For around £15, where someone else was wholly or partly at fault, an "uninsured loss recovery" (ULR) company will pursue them at no further cost to you. The ULR can attempt to recover the excess, hire car costs, compensation for injuries including whiplash or any other loss that is not covered by your own insurance. You may also get free access to telephone help lines Notify the insurance company, you should get third party insurance abroad at no extra cost. Some policies include full cover for no further charge, but extra payment is sometimes necessary. Check when shopping around for a policy.

Service Levels

Good policies take over the claims process, repairing your car and keeping you mobile after an accident, fire or theft, paying all bills on your behalf. Some insurers ask you to pay for repairs yourself and reclaim the costs later. Other insurers will provide very little cover for such costs. You may need to use the insurer's authorised garage to qualify for full cover. Some legal expenses insurance provides this cover for non-comprehensive policies if a negligent third party has been identified. No Claims Bonus

If you do not make a claim during your period of insurance cover, you are entitled to a discount on your annual premium which increases until you have been claim-free for four or more years, at which point you may protect it. A Protected No Claim Bonus will be unaffected by any claims you make. However, many insurers reserve the right to alter your premium following a claim or a motoring conviction. If you remain claim free and have earned the maximum No Claim Bonus you may also be entitled to a loyalty discount on your premium. (However, you may lose this if you make a claim).

What is a green card and when do I need one?

Your Certificate of Motor Insurance and the policy to which it relates is sufficient proof that you are insured to drive your car in member countries of the European Union. The Czech and Slovak Federal Republic, Hungary, Iceland, Norway and Switzerland are also covered. However, from time to time, participating countries may require a Green Card and this is available from your insurer on request. You will need a Green Card for all countries outside those listed above. Contact your insurer well in advance of your departure for further details. You may be charged for this service.
